Best Fire Pits under $2000 2023

A fire pit is fantastic to use all year round, but it gets increasingly enticing during the winter. You may gather around the comfortable glow with friends and family to roast marshmallows and hot dogs while taking in the stars if your outside area has a good fire pit. It is romantic, if that makes sense.

Our collection includes a range of types and sizes so you can discover the perfect fit for your yard and stay warm throughout the seasons, whether you’re seeking to buy your first fire pit or replacing one that’s spent a bit too much time in the sun and rain.

Don’t worry, installing a fire pit in your backyard or yard doesn’t require a significant commitment. You won’t need to make a permanent spot in your yard because some of the greatest fire pits are moveable. They are sold by well-known merchants like Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, and you can also purchase them directly from fire pit producers.

Fire pits, which are essentially outdoor fireplaces, differ widely in size, weight and price. Both expensive, high-performance pits and $50 alternatives are available. The price of a premium propane fire pit can reach $1,500. Because many of them also come with additions like a cooking grate, if you’re feeling particularly outdoorsy, you can grab your cast-iron cookware and prepare your supper over the coals in your backyard fire pit rather than in the kitchen.

All of the products on this list are from well-known outdoor brands, and they are either top sellers, highly rated products, or strong contenders for the title of best fire pit. We evaluated a variety of outdoor fire pits to identify their advantages and disadvantages as well as the caliber of the accessories they include, such as a cooking grate or only a fire poker. So are you prepared to assemble at the bonfire? Let us assist you in selecting the ideal wood fire pit for your patio or garden. Periodically, we’ll update this list of the top fire pit choices.

Tiki, a firm that started with the well-known Tiki bamboo torch more than 60 years ago, is the manufacturer of our favorite fire pit on the list. Now, Tiki sells a fire pit that is sizable, reliable, and lovely. The performance, use, and superior style of this pit, which costs over $300 more than its cheaper competitors, make the investment worthwhile.

The steel and stained wood pit has more than simply aesthetic appeal. With the Tiki Brand Fire Pit, a special circulation mechanism recycles hot smoke back into the fire chamber. It was easy to ignite during our testing, lighting up in around five minutes and burning through in fifteen.

Additionally, it produced significantly less smoke than the other fire pits we examined, especially once its logs had fully sparked, which was typically after 15 minutes. Only the Solo Stove Ranger produced less smoke while burning wood, yet its fuel burned ferociously after just five minutes. The wood in the Tiki Fire Pit burned effectively and continuously for several hours.

It is simpler to share the fire with several people due to its wide (16 inch) mouth. With a metal fire ring of 10 inches in diameter, the Solo Stove Ranger is more compact. However, children who congregate to roast s’mores should exercise caution: After the fire is kindled, the Tiki fire pit’s entire surface, including its metal lip, is searing hot. After the flames go out, it also takes some time to cool.

The ash pan of the Tiki Brand pit is detachable, which we love. It makes cleanup simple. Although possibly not perfect for warm summer nights, the pit generates a lot of heat, which is great when the weather drops in the fall and winter. This fire pit is heavy, too, weighing in at 45 pounds. Prior to placing it, consider your options carefully and enlist assistance.

Best durable fire pit: Breeo X Series 24

Smokeless Fire Pit | 22 Inches | Breeo X Series 19 Wood Burning Campfire | USA | Corten Steel | Best Durable Backyard Bonfire | Grilling & Cooking | Low Smoke Stove | Enjoy with A Group Or Solo
  • Smokeless Burn Technology - Made to elevate your backyard experience, the X Series uses our superior airflow technology to give you all the ability to gather around the fire without the smell and smoke.
  • Built Tough In The USA - We build our fire pits In Lancaster PA, out of heavy-gauge steel that is designed to last a lifetime.
  • Grilling & Cooking Compatible - Turn your fire pit into a live-fire cooking beast by adding our Outpost Grill or SearPlate Griddle to your grilling and entertaining arsenal.
  • Choose Your Finish - Available in Stainless Steel or Corten, both are corrosion resistant and give you the option to choose a look that matches your lifestyle.
  • Corten Steel - Corten Steel is designed to develop a protective Patina layer when in the elements. The Corten fire pit arrives in a blue steel finish and naturally develops the patina over time.

To say that the Breeo X Series 24 is built to withstand punishment would be an understatement. At Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the X Series is produced utilizing a mix of 304 stainless steel and corten (weathering) steel. As a result, the X Series does not require weather protection or a rain cover. In fact, after six months of exposure to the elements, the fire pit’s exterior wall develops a natural patina that inhibits corrosion.

Similar to Solo Stove’s smokeless fire pits, the X Series also incorporates a sophisticated airflow system created to assist secondary fuel combustion. The X Series pits are not as quick to light as the Solo Stove pits, but once the fire is started, it stays lit for a long time and, when done correctly, only needs a few small logs and kindling at first. While burning at full temperature, it produces a lot of heat, but the pit’s secondary burn produces very little smoke.

The stainless-steel sear plate of the X Series is also a wonderful addition. It spans a 29.5-inch circle and surrounds the outside of the fire pit. You may use the plate to heat pots, pans, and skillets as well as to cook burgers, poultry, and other savory foods.

You should also think about a few accessories. First up is Breeo’s $250 SearPlate griddle cooking adapter, which turns a surface into a compact grill. For the X Series, Breeo also offers a stainless-steel cover for $130. When not in use, it is intended to protect the pit from excessive moisture.

Be sure to carefully analyze the pit’s position, and one more thing. The second-heaviest pit in this range, the Tiki Fire Pit, weighs 60 pounds less than the X Series 24, which has a 78-pound weight. I suggest enlisting the help of a friend or two to move it to your patio or yard.

Best portable fire pit: BioLite FirePit Plus

Under 20 pounds and designed for portability, the FirePit Plus is created by Brooklyn-based BioLite. It is very long and narrow, measuring 27 by 13 by 15.8 inches, making it ideal for patio use. There is space for up to four cordwood logs, so it may handle a little more wood than you might anticipate. It was updated in 2021 with an enamel covering for easier cleaning and a higher-capacity battery for its built-in fan. You can use it as a conventional fire pit or as a backyard grill. It can also serve as a warmer for a patio.

When using a fire pit, you drop the fuel rack all the way to the bottom. To utilize the rack as a free-standing grill, raise it to the highest setting. This will allow you to cook, if you so want, over hot wood embers or charcoal briquettes. A package with a grill grate that covers everything is available from BioLite. The grill lit up quickly, taking less than five minutes, and it burned completely in under ten.

One of the distinguishing qualities of the FirePit Plus is its use of unique airflow technology. The heat output from the flames powers a motorized fan that blows air into the fire box. A Bluetooth-enabled phone app running on iOS or Android can also be used to control it. The FirePit’s mesh body allows you to view flames from any angle.

Battery life has increased by about 20% in the latest edition, with up to 30 hours of battery life on the low setting, 14 hours on medium, and 7 hours on high. It is useful as a patio heater since the airflow technology contributes to the practically smokeless nature of the fire. When you wish to move the barbecue, the legs of the FirePit Plus fold up, and the pit comes with a useful rain cover. An ashtray that is removable makes cleanup simple.

In conclusion, for someone who doesn’t want (or can’t have) a permanent pit always taking up patio space, this is a tempting tiny fire pit.

Best smokeless fire pit: Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0, Smokeless Fire Pit | Wood Burning Fireplaces with Removable Ash Pan, Portable Outdoor Firepit - Ideal for Camping, Stainless Steel, H: 14 in x Dia: 19.5 in, 20 lbs
  • MOST UNIQUE FIRE PIT: Bonfire pushes the limits of both combustion airflow efficiency and minimalist outdoor design with its all stainless steel construction. It was brilliantly engineered to provide a backyard fire experience that cannot be duplicated. The new 2.0 version features a removable base plate and ash pan for easy cleaning.
  • LESS SMOKE, MORE FLAME: The camping stove features our Signature 360° Airflow and double wall design with bottom vent holes for oxygen to feed the fire from below, creating a burst of hot air over the fire and reducing the smoke without the use of batteries and fans in your fireplaces. Enjoy a fire without the post-fire smell in your hair and clothes.
  • LONG LASTING & REMOVABLE ASH PAN: 304 stainless steel is highly durable, surprisingly lightweight, and won’t cave under the pressure of an ultra-hot flame. Our new, removable ash pan rests under the base plate, catching all the fine ash in one place. For clean up just lift the base plate to remove the ash pan and clean out its contents. Quick and easy!
  • PORTABLE DESIGN: Weighing in at just over 20 pounds, Bonfire is ready to go on the next adventure whenever you are. Just pack up your Bonfire in the included carry case, get moving and spark up a fire everywhere you go– whether you’re camping, partying at the beach, or just redecorating your backyard.
  • EASY TO USE: Making good moments should always be easy. This outdoor patio heater construction completely removes the need for parts and assembly! Just Flip the ring and light a fire. 14x19.5 inch size wood burning fire pit, fire pits for outside.

The earliest models of Solo Stove fire pits, which are among the best smokeless fire pits available and have a sleek appearance thanks to their stainless steel construction, had one drawback: They weren’t very simple to clean. The new Solo Stove 2.0 fire pits, which are available in the same three sizes — Ranger 2.0 (small), Bonfire 2.0 (middle), and Yukon 2.0 (large) — have changed that, and they also include a removable ash pan, which the 1.0 models lacked.

The 2.0 fire pits we tested have the same 360-degree Airflow Technology that enables smokeless burning, and from the exterior, they look identical to the 1.0 fire pit. When we tested the midsize Bonfire 2.0 model, starting fires was a breeze. Internally, there is a difference: after the fire has completely extinguished and cooled down, you simply remove the screen covering the pan, which gathers most of the cinders, before removing the pan itself and discarding the remaining ash (you no longer have to turn over the fire pit to remove the ash). After you remove the pan, some of the finer ash may fall to the bottom of the fire pit basin, but you can easily wipe that away with a moist cloth or piece of paper. Fire pits from Solo Stove are effective. In comparison to other fire pits we examined, they consistently consumed our test wood while producing significantly less smoke. Children (and adults) should exercise caution around the Bonfire 2.0, as they should around other high-performance fire pits. In addition to the fire’s extreme heat, the steel surface of the Bonfire quickly reaches scorching temperatures.

The larger Yukon fire pit from Solo Stove, which we previously tested and are currently on sale for $440, is also fantastic but a little difficult to carry around on your patio or in your yard because the 2.0 version weights 41.6 pounds (18.9 kg) as opposed to the Bonfire 2.0’s 23.3 pounds (10.6 kg). All Solo Stove Fire Pit 2.0 models come with a range of add-ons, including the brand-new Stand 2.0 and a rain cover. All models come with a carrying bag.

Count on the Solo Stove Mesa Table Top Fire Pit to help you create good moments that lead to lasting memories. Dimensions (HxW) – 6.9 x 5.1 in, 1.4lbs.

The second-generation Ranger 2.0, Bonfire 2.0, and Yukon 2.0 fire pits from Solo Stove, a manufacturer of some of the best smokeless fire pits, were released in August 2022. For its new Mesa fire pit, it has now shrunk even further.

The Mesa, as its name suggests, is made to fit on a tabletop and is portable enough to fit in a backpack. Although you could undoubtedly place it on the ground as well, putting it on a table puts it at a comfortable height for roasting marshmallows. It is the spiritual successor to the Solo Stove Lite, a small camp stove, and has the same 360-degree Signature Airflow technology (whether we’ll see some camping accessories for the Mesa is still up in the air). It’s a great little fire pit.

Best smokeless pellet pit: Pit Boss Pellet Fire Pit

Sale
Pit Boss Grills Smokeless Fire Pit, Black Sand, (10842)
  • Smokeless fire pit
  • Compatible with Pit Boss Wood Pellets
  • Portable
  • Steel double-wall construction
  • High temperature black sand finish

Using a pellet fire pit as opposed to a wood fire is different. If you add some pellets made for smoking foods, the fragrance may change, and the flames may feel more powerful. On a chilly November morning, the Pit Boss pellet fire pit kept me warm even from 6 feet away, and the pellets lasted a long time before they needed to be replenished.

The Pit Boss, like many contemporary fire pits, has a design that collects the smoke and circulates it so that you mostly get flames rather than smoke. Although pellet pits require an external accelerant to start, lighting it was simple. On mine, I used a tiny dab of barbeque lighter fluid, and it worked flawlessly. When you first light it, it does produce more smoke, but as the fire grows hotter, that decreases.

Along with a retractable ashtray to make emptying the pellet ash painless, it also comes with a quality-feeling cover to keep the weather off. Wood pieces don’t burn as evenly as pellets do, therefore there are never any unburned lumps in the ash. The Pit Boss has influenced my opinion, and I believe I now prefer pellet pits than wood.

The best tabletop gas fire pit: Outdoor Living Firebowl Deluxe

Despite the fact that the majority of our options are fire pits that burn wood, propane options have some advantages. For those who currently use gas for their barbecues and patio heaters, this 19-inch fire pit from Outdoor Living fits nicely on a table or the ground.

The Firebowl is safe to use because it has a beautiful long hose that keeps your gas tank away from the open flame. It produces a lot of heat, and since it is gas, the heat may be changed as needed. Wood burners don’t have the luxury of a fire pit, which can start the evening on a low setting for ambience and end it with a roaring fire to ward off the chill.

Additionally, the Firebowl includes lava rocks that are excellent for simulating a campfire because they add carbon to the flame, turning it yellow rather than blue. They also assist in maintaining heat even if you turn off the gas to save money. Instant heat is a key benefit of a gas fire pit. There is no need to wait for the fire to start; you can simply turn on the heat whenever you want.

Other top fire pits

The Pop-Up Fire Pit is very portable but makes a lot of smoke.

A metal “pop-up” fire pit table outside with a small flame burning.

Pop-Up Fire Pit: The Pop-Up Pit is the most transportable fire pit design in this compilation. You can rapidly put it together and disassemble it thanks to its collapsible construction. Additionally, it employs a heat screen to prevent burning the ground underneath. Additionally, the pit provides a sizable (2-foot square) burning surface for your fire. The Pop-Up Pit doesn’t rust because its frame is made of stainless steel. The pit, however, produces a lot of smoke due to its size and low sides.

Solo Stove Ranger: At first appearance, the stainless steel Solo Stove Ranger, which is squat, cylindrical, and small, seems straightforward. The Solo Stove Yukon, its larger twin, uses the same high-tech ventilation technology that is tucked away inside this pit. The mechanism is made to make the fire in the pit burn hotter and use more of the wood fuel available to it.

We can attest that the Ranger keeps its word on these assurances. It ignites quickly, setting its logs ablaze in about five minutes, and burns for several hours. Likewise, the flames we ignited in the Ranger blazed fiercely. Inside the pit, the fire concentrated into a stunning rolling vortex. The Ranger produced virtually little smoke despite the conflagration.

The Ranger does have several shortcomings. It can’t take regular 15-inch firewood logs because of its small size. Additionally, families or large groups should avoid using it. Anymore than two marshmallow roasters quickly turn into a crowd.

Kingso Outdoor Fire Pit (22-inch): Although the Kingso Outdoor Fire Pit is a top seller on Amazon, we don’t suggest buying it. Its 22-inch diameter makes it appear modest. We frequently struggled to start and maintain flames inside this pit due to the limited ventilation across the little fire pit unit. Additionally, there is no protective cover included.

The enormous, robust Hampton Bay Windgate 40-inch Dia Fire Pit is made of thick steel. Unfortunately, it has inadequate airflow, which causes its flames to frequently go out.

Hampton Bay Windgate 40-inch diameter round steel wood-burning fire pit: The largest fire pit in this collection is without a doubt the Hampton Bay Windgate. It includes a huge fire bowl with a 40-inch diameter that is large enough for large gatherings. It takes a lot of effort to set up the pit where you want it because it weights a substantial 60 pounds and is composed of heavy-duty steel. Unfortunately, there is inadequate ventilation in the Windgate steel fire pit. Because of this, the fires we set in the pit always extinguished within 15 to 20 minutes. This makes recommending this particular wood-burning pit model challenging.

Factors to consider

  • Ease of ignition
  • Ease of cleaning
  • Portability
  • Cooking accessories

How we tested fire pits

Wood-burning fire pits

We utilized the same kind of wood for testing each fire pit: Simple Simon Premium Hardwood from a nearby Lowe’s. We chose three split log lengths that were each around 15 inches long to ensure a steady supply. The logs were then placed so that at least a portion of each was in contact with the others.

We used Diamond Strike-a-Fire fire starters from our neighboring Kroger store to light each pit. It should only take one of these starter matches to ignite a fire in a fire pit. The time it took to start a fully sustained fire was then recorded.

In five to ten minutes, a good fire pit will fully ignite. No matter how neatly you lay your wood, a pit with inadequate ventilation and design will burn for much longer or even go out after 15 minutes. We also recorded the amount of smoke that emerged from each pit. A fire pit should ideally produce a lot of flame and little smoke. A high-quality fire pit will burn fuel well and leave minimal solid debris behind once the fire has naturally extinguished.

Gas fire pits

Since they don’t need to be lit, gas fire pits are simpler to test. Safety is the focus of our initial inspections: Are all of the gas fittings in place and functional? Is the hose the ideal length to prevent the propane tank from heating up? To keep everyone safe, these inspections are crucial.

Then, we drew lines every two, four, five, six, and seven feet. Then, three persons were seated around the firepit at those intervals to see how pleasant the heat was. The conventional unit of measurement for heat is the BTU, but knowing this won’t tell you how toasty you feel when you’re sitting next to one.

Pellet fire pits

We used the same fuel for all of the pits we evaluated, just like the wood-burning fire pit. I used two shot glasses of Kingsford lighter fluid as the accelerant and a two-gallon pail of Traeger Signature Blend wood pellets as the fuel. Then, we measured the times required for the fire to reach full flame and for it to extinguish.

Compared to a typical log flame, a pellet fire pit will light up considerably more quickly and burn evenly until it is extinguished. Despite the fact that the wood burns longer and is more expensive to buy in bulk, neither the pellet nor the wood were more expensive to test.

What is the best type of fire pit to buy?

There are two primary factors to take into account when choosing the sort of fire pit to buy. The first thing to consider is your budget. For instance, low-cost pits are often simple cast-iron ones without complex smokeless ventilation mechanisms. How you intend to use your pit should be the second consideration. The warmth, looks, and noises of a crackling fire are provided by simple pits. They work well for s’mores and the occasional hot dog, too. You will need to spend more money on a pit that is also made to function as a real outdoor barbecue if you want more sophisticated cooking capabilities.

Which fire pits give off the most heat?

All fire pits produce heat, although some produce considerably more than others. The least expensive and most common pits can produce a lot of heat. Sadly, they frequently produce a lot of smoke as well. Smokeless fire pits do heat up to higher degrees because they are made to promote a lot of airflow as they burn. But from my observation, Solo Stove fire pits direct a lot of their heat upward. Breeo pits, on the other hand, frequently feel warmer to the touch since they have a tendency to radiate more heat.

Which smokeless fire pit is the best?

The greatest fire pits are Solo Stove models from the aspect of pure smokeless performance. They are the simplest to light and maintain. They also emit the least smoke and produce the most dazzling, powerful flames. However, because Solo Stove pits direct a lot of their heat upward, they’re not the best for warming up sitting groups on chilly winter nights. Additionally, they are not intended for cooking complex outdoor feasts.

Can you put a fire pit on grass?

Yes, you can install a fire pit on grass, but you must exercise some caution. To prevent the pit from tipping over, you should first make sure the grassy area you select is level. Additionally, you should avoid harming your grass: Your grass will be subjected to heat stress from a fire pit, which could lead it to die or become brown. Creating a barrier between the grass and the fire pit is the best approach to prevent harm to your lawn. The fire pit can simply be placed on some patio slabs, or you can purchase a heat barrier or a fire-resistant mat. Whatever option you choose, make sure to move the fire pit periodically to prevent damaging the grass in one spot.

What types of ignitions are there for fire pits?

Simple match-based fire pit ignition systems are available, as well as more sophisticated ones that use electronics and an app. Match-lit fire pits are at one extreme of the range; all you have to do to get one going is turn on the gas and light a match. The technology that comes after that is a spark ignition system, which uses a battery-operated sparker and just requires a button press to ignite the flame. A flame-sensing fire pit takes things up a step by having a spark ignition as well as a flame sensor that can halt gas flow once flames go out for added safety. Electronic ignition kits, which are likewise flame-sensing and include an automated lighting process that can be controlled with a timer, a switch, a remote, or a phone app, are at the other extreme of the spectrum. These are the priciest and frequently necessitate having electricity nearby your fire pit.

Can I cook on my gas fire pit?

Except for toasting marshmallows, which only come into contact with the flame and not the fire pit itself, cooking on a gas fire pit that isn’t designed for cooking is not advised. However, some fire pits do provide add-ons for safe cooking, and some are made specifically for cooking.
