Best Concrete Sealers 2023

Several of the finest concrete sealers on the market were tested to determine which one provided the greatest level of waterproofing. See how they performed in our practical evaluations.

Modern concrete sealers are made to preserve concrete, extending its life and improving its performance both indoors and out. Concrete countertops and patio pavers benefit greatly from these goods because they offer an extra line of defense against the potential of unsightly staining and scuffing.

There are many varieties of concrete sealer on the market, and some are more effective than others at preventing harm from water and chemical intrusion over the long term. In order to determine which goods are worth the hype, we subjected concrete pavers and a concrete countertop to a battery of tests in which they were exposed to water, grease, dirt, and ice-melt chemicals.

You need a concrete sealant that will do its job and give you the look you want. Penetrating products offer nearly undetectable protection while film-forming ones create a smooth, long-lasting finish on concrete. If you’re looking for a uniform hue, like you’d get with concrete paint, some sealers come with a tint.

Find out why the following concrete sealers were selected and what to look for when buying for a concrete sealer by reading on. As a side note, you’ll also see which sealer we found to be the biggest letdown, as not all of the products we tried lived up to our expectations and made the cut.

How We Tested the Best Concrete Sealers

Each concrete sealant was put through rigorous testing, and those that fared best were given higher marks. We used a measure from 0 to 4, with 4 representing the highest quality, to conduct our tests. For instance, we gave a paver 4 stars if we found that it was particularly resistant to grease and stains after being treated with a sealer. Two points were awarded for modest stain resistance. Zero points were awarded if the stain persisted after being cleaned with a pressure washer.

Besides looking at how well each sealer prevented stains, we also evaluated how well its surface withstood freezing rain, ground-in sand, de-icing salts, mud, grease, and ultimately power-washing. Although concrete sealers are advertised as lasting a year or more, we were unable to put them through their paces because of time constraints. With only 3.5 weeks to go, we put the sealers through their paces by subjecting them to rigorous testing.

Exterior testing of concrete coatings was not conducted. Instead, we kept the pavers inside and subjected them to the same spills, stains, and all-purpose cleansers they would face in real life, and then scored them accordingly. The sealers that made it through our rigorous testing are, without a doubt, some of the finest available for protecting a wide variety of concrete items, both indoors and out.

Our Top Picks

To those in the market for a concrete driveway sealant, floor sealer, or countertop sealer, here are the results of our extensive, hands-on testing. Concrete pavers and a concrete counter were sealed in a regulated environment. After the sealers had cured, they were put through a series of realistic scenarios.

Foundation Armor AR350 Wet Look Concrete Sealer – BEST OVERALL

Armor AR350 Wet Look Concrete Sealer and Paver Sealer with Low Gloss Finish (1 GAL)
  • Penetrating high solids acrylic coating with unmatched bonding characteristics.
  • Durable, long lasting, professional grade solvent based acrylic offering superior performance abilities.
  • Satin sheen wet look finsih. Will bring out color in dulled substrates.
  • Can be used on poured concrete, stamped concrete, concrete pavers.
  • 1 gallon will cover up to 100 square feet in two coats.

In the end, we decided that the best product on the market was the Foundation Armor AR350 solvent-based acrylic concrete sealer because it completely surpassed our hopes. We were using a brush to evenly spread AR350 over a small, one-foot-by-one-foot concrete paver as part of the sealing process. It was easy to spread and quickly self-leveled into a nice, even layer. It dried fully in 24 hours while still retaining a subtle sheen, creating a beautiful finish that added depth and richness to the concrete without altering its original color.

After exposing the sealed paver to sub-zero temperatures, ice, intense sunlight, dirt, grease, and chemical ice melt for three and a half weeks, we concluded that it could withstand the rigors of a Canadian winter. In addition, we tested the surface’s scratch resistance by scattering grit across it and walking across it. When the testing time was complete, we gave the paver a good power washing, let it dry, and gave it a thorough once-over. The AR350 performed admirably. There was no obvious staining, dulling, or peeling of the surface on this Foundation sealer. The water beaded up on the top instead of soaking in.

The acrylic used in the construction of Foundation Armor AR350 is a solvent-based variety that does not discolor and allows air circulation. It gives concrete and pavers a long-lasting, low-gloss sheen that makes them look wet and revives tired, faded surfaces. It can be used on concrete that has not been coated or concrete that has been sealed with a solvent-based acrylic sealer.

This acrylic concrete sealer protects against deterioration caused by surface abrasion, freezing and thawing, and chemical contact. It stays in place and doesn’t peel, flake, fracture, or get pitted. Depending on the environment, this substance can last up to three years on concrete outdoors and seven years indoors before it needs to be reapplied.

  • Versatile formula; works on treated or untreated surfaces for added convenience
  • Recoating necessary after 3 to 7 years depending on surface type

Cons

  • Requires 2 coats for fully sealing concrete; requires more work compared to other sealers

  • 3 YEAR WARRANTY – MasonryDefender offers a 3 Year Limited Warranty on Horizontal Concrete Surfaces

Our research has proven that a high-quality concrete sealant can be obtained for significantly less than the going market rate. The concrete sidewalk sealer offered by MasonryDefender is a silane/siloxane blend that is water-based and offers long-lasting, breathable, waterproof protection.

This is the best option for people who don’t want to mess with the aesthetics of their concrete driveways, patios, or any other exterior surface.

We brushed MasonryDefender onto one side of the block and sprayed the other. It was simple to apply and immediately worked its way beneath the skin. We prepared the paver for 24 hours in the weather by coating it with grease, mud, ice melt, and sand.

After waiting 3 and a half weeks, we power-washed the brick and let it dry. Not a single stain was visible, though a few grit scuffs were visible. A drop of water poured onto the surface beaded up on the stone, proving that MasonryDefender was still functioning.

Environmentally favorable silane/siloxane mix bonds to mineral aggregates in concrete, creating an invisible, long-lasting barrier against water, stains, and chemical damage. Surfaces that have been treated are protected from cracking and discoloration. This substance can be applied to clean pavement with a brush or a pump-up garden sprayer, and it has a lifespan of up to five years.

Ghostshield Siloxa-Tek 8500 Concrete Sealer – BEST PENETRATING

Siloxa-Tek 8500 Ready to Use - 1 Gallon Penetrating Concrete Sealer, Water and Salt Repellent
  • An industrial-grade, water-based, silane/siloxane engineered to reduce water and moisture intrusion, while protecting concrete or masonry substrates from chlorides and deicing salts.
  • Resists deicing salt/chloride damage, freeze thaw damage, spalling, pitting, cracking
  • Reduces water ingress, moisture intrusion and ASR

  • Use on driveways, garages, basements, patios, pool decks. Covers up to 250 sqaure feet per gallon per coat.

This futuristic silver container contains a high-quality penetrating concrete sealer that is water-based and has a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Even though there are a variety of methods for applying Ghostshield’s Siloxa-Tek 8500 concrete sealer, we found that brushing it onto dry, spotless pavers was the most effective method. Since it seeped in so rapidly, we were dubious that it would be able to form a waterproof barrier. After waiting for the Siloxa-Tek 8500 to cure for 24 hours, we left it outside in all kinds of weather and exposed it to mud, grease, de-icing salts, and rubbed-in sand for a total of three and a half weeks. The paver was quite dirty by the time the tests were complete, but a quick blast with the power cleaner restored it to like-new condition. We put it to the water test after giving it ample time to dry, and it beaded up.

This sealer will not alter the appearance of the concrete, and it is also meant to prevent the development of mold and mildew (though we weren’t able to test this). Even though the manufacturer suggests using two coats for maximum protection, we only used one for testing reasons.

Product Specs

  • Ease of use: Easy
  • Coverage area: 1 gallon covers up to 250 square feet per coat
  • Type: Water-based

Pros

  • Penetrates rapidly for a quick curing time; only takes 24 hours to cure fully
  • Dries clear; will not change appearance of concrete or create a shiny hue
  • Protects against chemicals, stains, mold, and mildew; prevents any additional driveway maintenance

Cons

  • Slightly pricey compared to similar concrete sealers available on the market

Eagle Armor Seal Urethane Acrylic Concrete Sealer – BEST ACRYLIC

Eagle Sealer Clear Armor Seal(Not Sold in HI, PR, AK, GU, VI)
  • Durable Clear Sheen
  • Water based for Low Odor
  • Does not blush when wet
  • Non-yellowing UV resistant
  • Protects from water, salt, and UV damage

We tried a small number of interior concrete sealers, and Eagle Armor Seal is one of the few that passed muster. The liquid sealant looked like milk when we brushed it onto our paver, but after 30 minutes, the whiteness had disappeared and a sheen had emerged. Since the intended use of this product is on indoor concrete, which typically has a smooth surface (like the paver we used for testing), we found that we needed to apply a second coat after the suggested 4 hours had passed.

Testing of the Eagle Armor Seal product began after 48 hours of curing. We left the paver indoors and subjected it to pretty heavy foot traffic after lightly dusting it with sand, but it showed no signs of wear and tear at all. We placed a few drops of red wine, orange juice, chicken broth, and Italian salad dressing on it to see how they would stain. All of the liquids gathered up on the cement surface. We waited for the liquids to dry where they fell, and then we mopped the floor with an all-purpose cleanser. Really, that’s quite a feat, because there are no visible marks anywhere.

The surface sheen of the paver did not diminish in the least during the 312 weeks of testing, despite repeated wiping with a variety of domestic floor cleaners. When the testing was complete, the paver appeared as good as it did when it was first coated.

Product Specs

  • Ease of use: Easy
  • Coverage area: 1 gallon covers 100 to 200 square feet of concrete and pavers and 300 square feet of smooth surfaces
  • Type: Acrylic

Pros

  • Easy to apply; simply brush on with a paint brush or roller
  • Dries to a sheen to add a finished luster to concrete
  • Imparts a protective coat to prevent long-term damage or wear

Cons

  • Not for use outdoors; suitable for basements, stairs, or other indoor concrete surfaces

TotalBoat TableTop 1-Gallon Epoxy Resin Kit – BEST EPOXY

TotalBoat Table Top Epoxy Resin 1 Gallon Kit - Crystal Clear Coating and Casting Resin for Bar Tops, Table Tops, Wood, Concrete, Epoxy Art & Crafts
  • CLEAR EPOXY RESIN for a high gloss finish on bar tops, table tops & countertops; add pigments, tints or encapsulations to make your piece truly unique; versatile craft resin is also great for coating tumblers and casting coasters & jewelry
  • EPOXY RESISTS SCRATCHES, STAINS AND YELLOWING: Self-leveling formula cures to a finish as smooth as glass; use this versatile DIY resin on wood, concrete, ceramic, stainless steel and more; 100% waterproof upon cure
  • 2 PART EPOXY IS EASY TO USE: Just mix 1 part resin to 1 part hardener, stir thoroughly, and pour on your prepared surface; the epoxy will level on its own and cure at room temperature; maximum pour depth per layer is 1/8" - 1/4"
  • NO VOCs, LOW ODOR, BPA-FREE: No harsh fumes - ideal for indoor or shop use with adequate ventilation and proper PPE; all ingredients in this food safe epoxy resin are on the USDA approved list for contact with food, once cured; 100% made in the USA
  • 1 GALLON EPOXY KIT includes 1/2 gallon of resin & 1/2 gallon of hardener; application temperature: 70-80°F; working time: 20 min. @ 70°F; recoat time: 4-8 hrs; cure time: 16-20 hrs @ 70°F; coverage: 12.8 sq ft at 1/8" thick; store at 60-90°F

With the aid of the TotalBoat TableTop 1-gallon epoxy resin kit, you can create this high-gloss, crystal-clear film. The kit consists of an epoxy resin and hardener, which you mix together. This epoxy is safe for use with food because it does not off-gas VOCs during curing and does not contain bisphenol A (BPA).

Despite having the word “boat” in its name, the TotalBoat epoxy sealer is only intended for indoor use, so we tried it on a concrete paver without subjecting it to the elements. Part A (the resin) and Part B (the hardener) were each poured into a clean plastic receptacle and mixed for about 5 minutes with a clean paint stick. The key to a smooth-looking epoxy coating is a gradual stirring motion, which allows for thorough mixing without aeration.

We spread newsprint over the work surface and poured the mixed TotalBoat Epoxy onto the paver. Within a minute, it had balanced itself out, and the surplus had flowed off the paver’s sides. It wasn’t brushed or otherwise manipulated on our part. When sealing porous concrete, air escapes and the bubbles become caught in the epoxy, causing the surface to develop a few bubbles. In order to fix this, we used a small culinary torch to gently heat the epoxy, which caused the bubbles to burst and leave a smooth, glassy finish. We waited 24 hours to begin testing after letting the paver dry.

Different liquids, such as red wine, citrus juice, chicken broth, and salad dressing, were dropped onto the surface with a dropper. They were not absorbed. After spraying an all-purpose cleaner on the hardened liquids and wiping them away, we noticed no staining. Knowing that epoxy can be damaged, we decided against running the sand abrasion test. While TotalBoat’s epoxy did not yellow during our testing period, it is not suitable for sealing a kitchen tabletop because of its lack of heat resistance. TotalBoat’s epoxy, when properly mixed and put on, creates a protective, glassy surface that displays what’s underneath.

Seal-Once Nano + Poly Concrete and Masonry Sealer – BEST POLYURETHANE

Seal-Once NANO + POLY Concrete and Masonry Sealer
  • Ultra-low VOC
  • Non Toxic Will not Harm pets, plants or people
  • No Odor
  • Will Not Peel
  • Water based formula Soap and Water Clean-up

With its unique blend of permeating nanotechnology and polyurethane, Seal-Once Nano + Poly Concrete and Masonry Sealer provides superior, long-lasting protection. It seeps deep into the concrete and forms a solid, watertight barrier within the material, protecting it from flooding and other water damage. Its purpose is to protect surfaces from deterioration caused by efflorescence, cracking, spalling, mold and mildew development, lime bloom, and freezing and thawing.

Seal-Once’s eco-friendliness won us over, and we appreciated that once it dried it was safe to use around kids and animals. However, it does have some odor, and we had to open the windows in the building to let the smell out while we applied it to a concrete paver. We painted the sealer on with a brush; it went on milky but sealed clear. There was a film on the paver after 24 hours, but it was aesthetically pleasing; it didn’t alter the hue of the concrete in any way, and it provided a smooth, even surface. We subjected it to a battery of field experiments, including exposure to mud, grease, de-icing salts, and rubbed-in sand. A downspout was nearby, and when we had freezing rain, the water poured over this particular paver and froze into a dense layer on top. A more perfect ice test was not possible to arrange!

After conducting tests, we used a power washer to clean the pavers and saw some dulling in the areas where de-icing chemicals had been used. We checked the specs again and discovered that the maker makes no claims about chemical resistance. This sealer maintained its ability to prevent water from penetrating the concrete and, therefore, is ideal for use in areas where de-icing agents will not be applied. Seal-Once Nano + Poly provides protection from the sun’s rays, wear and tear, and water damage by penetrating the concrete and coating its interior pores and forming a resilient surface layer.

Product Specs

  • Ease of use: Easy
  • Coverage area: 1 gallon covers 250 to 350 square feet per coat (depending on surface porosity)
  • Type: Polyurethane

  • Environmentally friendly nontoxic formula; a great option for the eco-conscious consumer
  • Clear matte finish is nonyellowing and will not make surface slippery
  • Durable finish will not crack, patch, or scratch over time and wear
  • Lasts for 10 years; durable with no need for frequent reapplication

Cons

  • Application sprayer is not included and must be purchased separately
  • Some VOCs and odor emitted; may not be suitable for eco-conscious consumers

EcoProCote Eco-Tuff Clear Coat Polyurethane Sealer – BEST ECO-FRIENDLY

Eco-Tuff Clearcoat Concrete Sealer and Wood Floor Sealer | Polyurethane Countertop Sealer (1 Gallon, Matte)
  • EXCELLENT SURFACE FINISH: The Eco-Tuff concrete sealer is formulated to provide a long-lasting, durable, and protective coating on concrete, wood, primed metal surfaces and more. ; well suited for interior and exterior projects.
  • ABRASION RESISTANCE: Formulated with bio-polyurethane, the countertop sealer provides excellent surface resistance from scratch, hot tire pick up, abrasion, water, chemicals, and UV.
  • EASY TO USE: This cement and wood sealer can be applied with mechanical airless or HVLP sprayers, trim pads, rollers or with a high-quality brush.
  • VERSATILE APPLICATIONS: Get a fine finish on concrete, masonry, wood, cement, and natural stone surfaces. It can also be used on cabinets, garage floors, doors, , manufactured products, and tiles.
  • NON-TOXIC, SUSTAINABLE: The gloss finish sealer is virtually odorless, non-toxic and plant-based. It is an epoxy alternative, free of off gassing and no Red List Chemicals.

Eco-Tuff Clear Coat wood and concrete sealer was the only sealer we tried that left no odor behind, which was excellent because we didn’t have to crack open the shop’s windows even though the temperature outside was only 15 degrees Fahrenheit. This eco-friendly, non-hazardous sealant is derived from plants, emits zero hazardous volatile organic compounds, and is free of all substances on the Red List. (The International Living Future Institute compiled the Red List of chemicals and materials known to be harmful to humans in order to raise public knowledge and encourage the use of safer alternatives.) It was faintly milky when brushed on the paver, but dried clear and matte.

As soon as the sealer had set, we moved the paver to an outdoor area to put it through its paces there. We did see some scuffing from the rubbed-on sand, but only because we had rubbed quite hard and not applied as many layers as was advised. Since the sealer prevented grease, mud, and de-icing salts from staining the paver after it was washed and dried, we didn’t see this as a major disadvantage.

This sealer is versatile, as it can be applied over water-based paint on a variety of substrates and enhanced with the addition of decorative chips, mica crystals, or nonskid powders. Because it’s constructed out of bio-polyurethane, it’s highly resistant to the effects of moisture, sunlight, toxins, scratches, and even heat.

Product Specs

  • Ease of use: Moderate
  • Coverage area: 1 gallon covers 300 to 400 square feet per coat
  • Type: Bio-polyurethane

Pros

  • Durable, clear finish will not leave a luster on concrete surfaces
  • Versatile formula; suitable for indoor and outdoor use on metal, concrete, and wood

There was no way to apply it evenly with a brush because it seeped in so quickly. The hermetically sealed paver was put through the same battery of tests as the rest, and it passed with glowing colors. No stains, scratches, or dullness were visible after being washed with electricity. Water instantly formed beads on the paver’s surface.

This water-based, low-VOC, high-solids sealer makes it simple to seal previously uncoated concrete, masonry, pavers, flagstone, or slate surfaces, whether they are vertical or horizontal. In fact, the product has been authorized by the U.S. Department of Transportation and put to use in several states to prevent water absorption and freeze-thaw damage to roads and bridges. It can be sprayed on or rolled on swiftly and easily in the garden. Protection can be maintained for up to ten years without reapplication.

Only Tuff Duck wasn’t put through its paces on a concrete block for testing. This was the ideal opportunity to finally seal the concrete countertop we’d been meaning to finish and give it a try for some time now.

Milky when applied, Tuff Duck cured to a semigloss finish. Despite our hopes for a matte surface, we appreciated the glossy appearance. To avoid brush marks, we used a microfiber roller instead of the suggested microfiber pad, rolling gently over the sealer while it was still wet. Once the sealant cured, the surface was perfectly smooth.

Drops of red wine, salad dressing, chicken broth, and orange juice were placed on the Tuff Duck concrete countertop sealer and left to cure. A kitchen spray was used to remove the dried substances after waiting 24 hours. Over the next few weeks, we used a variety of common home cleaners to periodically wipe down the countertop. There was no evidence of staining or dulling. Simple water testing showed that the surface beaded up neatly and did not absorb the water.

However, the RainguardPro Micro-Seal penetrating concrete sealant fell short of our expectations. Micro-Seal is a primer and sealer designed for use on concrete and stone that is best applied using a sprayer before being painted. We loaded up the sprayer, but it became blocked after only a few sprays. As a result, we poured the sealer into a big coffee filter to remove the debris that had clogged the sprayer’s nozzle.

However, we persisted with the testing, and in the end, when we power washed the product, the sealer peeled off in pieces despite the product drying blotchy. We don’t know if the product had expired or if it had been subjected to high temperatures during storage or transport, both of which could have led to its decomposition. We don’t want to give the wrong impression about the sealer’s overall quality, and it’s possible that we just got a dud batch, but based on our experience, we can’t suggest it.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Concrete Sealer

Choosing the right concrete sealer requires consideration of a number of variables. There are a number of factors to consider before settling on a concrete sealer, including the surface’s compatibility with the sealer, the effects of weather on the sealant, and the potential for environmental damage. Here we’ll take a deeper look at what you should think about when selecting a sealer for your project.

Types of Concrete Sealers

Knowing the various options for concrete sealers is useful when making a purchase. Following is a breakdown of some of the most vital features of concrete sealers, as each variety has its own set of qualities that make it particularly well-suited to certain tasks.

Penetrating

Penetrating sealers are able to penetrate deep into the concrete and fill the microscopic cracks and crevices. They create a protective chemical layer against water and other substances, such as those found in ice melt products.

The majority of these sealers are transparent, meaning they safeguard without altering the look of the surface. Also, they usually enable moisture vapor to escape and are therefore breathable. Driveways, sidewalks, patios, and other outdoor surfaces benefit greatly from penetrating sealers because of the superior security they offer against the elements.

In order to prevent cracking and rust from occurring on exposed concrete surfaces, penetrating sealers are used in the winter. These products provide exceptional weather protection without altering the surface’s appearance, curing in less than 24 hours, and leaving a sheen or slickness. The use of a paint brush or high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) sprayer makes their application a breeze.

Acrylic

Some acrylic concrete sealers are water-based, while others use a liquid. Where easy implementation and low price are prioritized, these goods shine.

In combination, they create a thin layer that prevents water and chloride from penetrating the slab but allows moisture vapor to exit. Acrylic concrete sealers, which come in a variety of gloss levels, can be used indoors or outdoors to improve the look of pigmented, exposed, or stamped concrete. Acrylic sealers are not affected by the sun’s rays, so you can use them outside without worrying about any yellowing.

An excellent option for time-sensitive tasks, acrylic sealers dry in an hour and are completely cured after 36 to 48 hours. They can shield outdoor concrete floors from the damaging effects of moisture and salt, or they can be used to preserve the surface and improve the color of floors inside a building.

As a result of its thinner consistency, acrylic breaks out more quickly and needs to be reapplied more frequently than epoxy or polyurethane, typically every three years. When working outside, solvent-based acrylics are preferable to water-based ones. Use a brush or a pump sprayer to apply the coating in extremely thin coats.

Epoxy

A dense protective layer is added by epoxy concrete sealers, making the concrete more resistant to wear and abrasion. This sealant can be found in both clear and tinted varieties, and it has excellent water resistance and a glossy appearance. It’s a lot tougher than acrylic, but it won’t let any of the wetness in the concrete floor escape.

These long-lasting sealers are commonly used on concrete countertops and in high-traffic places like garages and basements. When subjected to sunlight, epoxy sealers turn yellow and can no longer be used outdoors. The vast majority of these are two-component items that require a mixing step prior to use.

The sealer must be applied instantly after combining, before it sets. Pour the mixture onto the surface, spread it out with a squeegee, and finish by rolling it out with a lint-free roller for a clean finish.

Polyurethane

With polyurethane concrete sealers, you get a protective coating that’s twice as thick as acrylic but thinner than epoxy. Excellent abrasion and chemical resilience are just two of the many benefits of polyurethane, which can be found in a variety of sheen levels and formulations (water or solvent based). It gives a nonyellowing, transparent, and durable finish that can be used indoors or out.

High-traffic floors, concrete tables, and decorative concrete types like colored, exposed aggregate, and stamped concrete can all benefit from polyurethane concrete sealers. Apply using a microfiber brush or a high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) airless sprayer to create a smooth, even layer.

Surface Type

There is a significant performance variation among concrete sealers that is directly related to the surface type being sealed. A penetrating sealer is ideal for sealing exterior concrete areas that see a lot of foot activity, such as driveways, walkways, and patios. Because of their superior resistance to the abrasive impacts of scraping and plowing in cold climes, silane and silane/siloxane blends are widely used in these settings. Both silane/siloxane blends and acrylics fare well in hot environments. To achieve an ornamental effect, high gloss, or enhanced color, acrylic is your best bet.

The concrete in cellars, garages, and workshops is subjected to a great deal of wear and tear. Acrylics based on water or solvents both offer excellent protection, but solvent-based acrylics tend to last longer.

To prevent stains, concrete surfaces need to be sealed. In this case, a polyurethane or epoxy concrete sealant would be the best choice. Both sealants cure to a nonporous surface that is easily cleaned and sanitized, so they can be used in kitchens. However, since a sharp knife could scratch the surface of a sealed concrete tabletop, it shouldn’t be used for that purpose.

Climate

There are few things more detrimental to concrete than moisture and salt, yet both of these can be problems based on where you live. Crack fillers are needed because of the concrete’s porous nature, which enables moisture to seep in and expand and contract during freeze-thaw cycles, causing cracks. The salt in glacier melt, lawn chemicals, sea spray, and other environments causes corrosion and weakens concrete. Sealing your driveway, sidewalk, or terrace will prevent damage from water, oil, and other fluids.

In order to prevent water and chemical penetration, a penetrating concrete sealer is the material of choice for most outdoor areas. Since penetrating sealers do not alter the surface texture of the concrete, they do not make the surface any more slippery when damp or icy. So the concrete keeps its natural look, they are virtually undetectable.

Environmental Impact

Toxic and irritating to the skin and eyes are the vapors given off by solvent-based sealers like solvent-based acrylic. Inhaling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over time can cause a wide variety of serious, long-term health issues.

There is less risk of exposure to harmful gases during the administration of water-based sealers. In order to reduce the amount of time spent handling the product, it is preferable to use water-based sealers that require less frequent upkeep applications.

Finish

Concrete sealers used outdoors should block ultraviolet light and be impervious to water damage. It’s also critical that they drain water and don’t get slick in the cold and rain. The use of a penetrating sealant allows for an almost undetectable finish, while the use of acrylic allows for a variety of sheen levels.

Exterior sealants are more likely to be used to protect against the elements than interior sealers. Slab surfaces benefit from sealers with good breathability, and while UV protection isn’t necessary indoors, waterproofing is still a must. Select epoxy or polyurethane for the table tops, and acrylic for the flooring.

Aesthetic

If you’re looking for a sealant for your concrete that will last and give you options in terms of how it looks, look no further than acrylic sealers. This sealer has a transparent, matte to glossy shine, and it is applied smoothly.

When it comes to sealing concrete surfaces, epoxy concrete sealers are your best bet. Epoxy can be used to create a clear coat or an array of colored finishes that are thick, extremely robust, and glossy.

Application

You can use a standard yard pump sprayer or an HPLV (high-pressure, low-volume) sprayer to apply many different types of concrete sealers. You can also use a paint brush or stain roller that doesn’t leave lint behind to apply them. Epoxy is applied with a notched squeegee and smoothed out with a lint-free roller after the resin and hardener have been fully mixed.

The Advantages of Using Concrete Sealer

Applying a coat of concrete sealer is a great way to finish off any concrete project, whether it’s brand new building, a renovation, or just a thorough cleaning. Damage to open concrete can occur from freezing and thawing as well as from exposure to salt, on top of the normal wear and tear that occurs over time.

Additionally, moss and mildew can quickly colonize unsealed concrete, further weakening the material. Unsealed concrete is much more likely to acquire cracks, delamination, and other structural problems. Long-term harm to concrete can be prevented with the help of concrete sealer. A pathway made of sealed concrete can last up to 30 percent longer than one made of untreated concrete.

Stamped, tinted, and exposed aggregate concrete all profit from having their colors and decorative features preserved with the help of concrete sealer. Hard water, solvents, rust, petroleum products, and other staining agents are no match for this concrete. When concrete is cemented, cleaning time and effort are reduced.

  • Sealing a concrete floor or patio will keep it looking new for a lot longer.
  • When concrete is sealed, it is more difficult for filth and grime to penetrate its surface.
  • A sealer can improve the appearance of dyed, stamped, and exposed aggregate concrete, among other decorative concrete techniques.

FAQs

There may be some things you don’t understand about purchasing and utilizing these goods if you’re planning a concrete-sealing job. Read on for explanations of several concerns people typically have when shopping for and using concrete sealant.

Q. Which concrete sealer should I use?

Choosing the proper concrete sealant for a given job requires careful consideration of a number of factors. Sealing a concrete driveway with a penetrating sealer, an interior floor with an acrylic sealer, and a concrete countertop with an epoxy or polyurethane sealer are all good practices. Take into account the nuances that are discussed in this piece regarding the distinctions between these categories.

Q. Is it better to roll or spray concrete sealer?

Concrete sealant is best applied with a high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) or airless sprayer in the vast majority of situations. You’ll have the most precise control over any sealant you use with them. Additionally, they facilitate the user’s ability to efficiently and rapidly cover vast areas.

Most sealants, both water- and solvent-based, can be rolled with a thickness of between 14 and 38 inch. When used with sealers that have a solids composition higher than 35%, or on surfaces that are rough or textured, its efficacy decreases.

Q. Can you apply concrete sealer over an old sealer?

Sealer for concrete should not be reapplied over previously sealed concrete. Before applying a new layer of sealant, make sure the surface has been properly prepared by wearing or stripping away the old sealer.

Q. What is the best way to apply concrete sealer?

Most concrete sealers are best applied with a high-velocity, low-pressure (HVLP) or airless sprayer.

Q. Does concrete sealer wear off?

Sealer for concrete does break down over time. Depending on the grade of the seal, resealing is necessary after one to ten years, or when water no longer beads up on the surface. If your acrylic, polyurethane, or epoxy has lost its luster after 3 to 5 years, resealing is in order.
